Mineral oil is a complex hydrocarbon that can be categorized into two groups: straight-chain and branched-chain alkanes and alkyl-substituted cycloalkanes, commonly known as MOSH, and alkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbons or MOAH, which also contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and sulfur- and nitrogen-containing compounds. MOSH is most commonly consumed in the human diet, primarily accumulating in the lymph nodes and spleen. While it has low to moderate toxicity, long-term ingestion of food contaminated with MOSH can lead to severe damage to human health. White oil, also known as liquid paraffin, is typically MOSH in food-grade mineral oil, while industrial-grade mineral oil contains a higher concentration of MOSH and varying levels of MOAH, typically ranging from 15% to 35%.
